Bergnek Demographics Report – December 2016 Bergnek, Polokwane, Capricorn District, Limpopo Province South Africa (GPS 24,1843s 29,3340e)
This report is produced by Universal Alliance in collaboration with Bergnek Community Projects Cooperative who requested the survey, community development partner MyArmsWideOpen and communications to crowd funding platform The Citizens Media.
This Demographic Survey is not a solution; it is a study of conditions affecting our lives and the environment that will allow the people of Bergnek to make better decisions and participate in creating an environment in which everyone’s needs may be met. In the greater scheme of things “People Matter First”, while many might disagree and say the environment comes first. The environment is equally important, but the greatest factor influencing the environment is the people. Therefore it will take the combined efforts of the people through a process of acquiring knowledge, actively participate and take ownership of the problem in order to resolve it. This will only happen if people have something to gain by solving it and not through a process of exclusion and mounting poverty, to the point where people have nothing further to lose but their dignity.
The following observations were made from the survey:
Some Key Statistics and Changes from 2011-2016
Population 30% Young (0-14) Up 1 8% - Working Age (15-65) Up 36% - Elderly (65+) Up 39% - Matric Down 0.5% - Higher Education Up 146% - Houses from 351- 455 - Computers Up 5% - Motor Vehicles Up 55% - Refrigeration Up 25% - Unemployment Up 57.5% - No Toilets 3.7% - Home Lang. Speed Down 11% - Live & Work in Cities Up 3.4% - Not Working Up 400%
- The uncontrolled property expansion of the community without adequate analysis and planning of available natural resources like water, can lead to greater stress on the people as well as the eventual collapse of the community or large scale migration to the cities.
- For this planning to take place, further analysis into the communities needs and skills need to be done, to ensure natural and financial resources can be obtained to meet their needs. Then the skills and participation of the people within the community should be used to create jobs during development to reduce unemployment. While outside skills should only be brought in where necessary to assist in the transfer of knowledge and experience to those seeking it, so that people in the community directly benefit from work done.
- There is an immediate and urgent need to resolve the water supply issue, so that economic development and job/wealth creation can take place within the community. This should be done in a supported manner ensuring the people in the community are the shareholders of enterprises they work in for profit share, long-term wealth creation and the direct beneficiaries of economic development for future sustainability.
- Facilities for higher education needs to be addressed and made available within the community. Many students do not have the resources to attend or pay outside institutions after matriculating, resulting in them not having the incentive to complete their secondary education and attain a higher education.
- More than 1 in 4 homes are tin shacks or empty stands, resulting in many people in some families having to share and live in one home. To resolve these living conditions, brick and cement homes need to be built for the people by the people.
It appears the main challenges in the community are water, job creation, infrastructure development, brick and mortar homes, access to higher education and from having spent time in the community primary health care. More will be identified during the needs analysis and skills surveys to follow.
In conclusion it has become clear that governments worldwide no longer have the funds and resources to resolve the challenge of poverty on their own, as a result of the huge global debt of $152 Trillion to the bankers as reported by the Vatican. Together with the loss of over 76 Million jobs worldwide since 2007 and corporate downsizing, this problem will only get worse with the increase in prices of essential products and services. It has therefore become necessary for people to participate in developing their communities for all to benefit through the creation of jobs and businesses at community level using innovative models of wealth creation.
